Latest News
November 2011 Update:

Söderhamn Eriksson Ltd have received an order for a Bruks BK-DH 365x560 Drum Chipper from Anglian Timber Ltd for their sawmill at Chirnside near Duns in Scotland. The BK-DH 365x560 Drum Chipper is a market leader for sawmills etc. It’s designed to allow easy access for maintenance and also to help with the lowering of potential damage caused by contamination getting in to the machine by having a “drop-away” anvil assembly – if a high impact happens between the knife and anvil, shear pins break and the anvil drops away thus hopefully lowering the amount of any damage caused. Other chippers’ anvils are fixed and damage therefore can be much higher.

The new chipper will be installed at Easter 2012 and will replace an existing Bruks chipper that has run very well since 1991 - 20 years of hard work !

September 2011 Update:

John Gordon & Son Ltd of Nairn are upgrading their Catech edger optimiser. Söderhamn Eriksson Ltd together with our sister company Söderhamn Eriksson Catech AB have received an order for the upgrading of an existing Catech edger optimizer from John Gordon & Son Ltd. in Nairn, Scotland.

The upgrade will convert a lengthwise measuring edger optimizer with top-face scanning into a crosswise measuring edger optimizer with double-face scanning. The aim is to increase capacity and further reduce downtime of the plant as well as increasing yield by means of “skewing” of the board whilst edging. The delivery includes a new scanner with our OptiScan 6000 optimizing system, a new Siemens S7 PLC, new servos and a lot of new mechanical equipment. Delivery time is mid-October and installation and commissioning of the entire project will require one working week and two weekends.

August 2011 Update:

Taylormade Timber Products Ltd of Sherburn Hil near Durham have ordered 6 PST Shaftless Spiral Conveyors for installation in the first week of January 2012. This takes the number of Spirals they have to 18 transporting wood chip and sawdust throughout the sawmill.

Taylormade have pioneered the use of Spirals in UK sawmilling taking their first delivery in the latter part of 2007. All conveyors are running very well and require a very low level of maintenance compared to chain conveyors etc that have traditionally been used in sawmills.

July 2011 Update:

A & J Scott Ltd the sawmillers based in Northumberland have placed an order with Söderhamn Eriksson Ltd for their third Bruks drum chipper. The first Bruks chipper was supplied many years ago and the machine that is to be replaced is going to be refurbished and then reinstalled in place of a smaller chipper. A & J Scott's MD, Robert Scott said "The Bruks chipper is a tried and tested machine, very reliable and robust. We have been very satisfied with the machines Söderhamn Eriksson have supplied us so far so I saw no reason to look anywhere else". Delivery and installation will take place in October.

March 2011 Update:

During the last year or so business has been tough throughout the world. But we have been pushing on with the new and various markets within Biomass and Recycling – please see our new section on these – and of course with sawmilling. Sawmills in the UK have been extremely busy with production at very high levels giving a much needed boost to their companies' economies………..
Sawmilling:

You may have seen on our Home page some time ago that we have now got a new member of the SE family – Catech. By us buying them it has secured the future for many customers with Catech edging lines, all of which would have been lost thus leaving a huge amount of customers in limbo. It can be said that this is nothing but good news for our customers; a secure supply and the possibility of further improving their installations by upgrading to a higher capacity.

James Jones's mill – Lockerbie 3 – has been up and running again after the fire for some months now. Hard work by both SE's engineers and James Jones's personnel ensured the work involved was done as quickly as possible. This is extremely good news for a company after a fire at such a new mill.

Recent installations have included chip and sawdust handling via PST Spirals (including a vertical one) at Taylormade Timber near Durham and a soon to be installed fully refurbished chipper edger with new style chipper heads and new style infeed works. The Almab stacker supplied to BSW has also been installed and is going through the testing and commissioning stages.
Debarker
Otherwise upgrading of existing machinery has been the name of the game. We have carried out edger optimiser electronics upgrades at Ellis Timber, Pontrilas, Taylormade, Adam Wilson (Catech) and we have orders to do the same for Drenagh Sawmills in Northern Ireland and James Jones's Aboyne sawmill in North East Scotland. We have also upgraded Cambio 45 and Cambio 75 debarkers to Air-Ten rotors at Carronbridge and Pontrilas respectively. The Air-Ten upgrade gives the customers increased debarking results, easier tool tension setting (kinder to the logs and the Cambio) and lower maintenance costs as the whole debarking procedure is much smoother than with rubber bands. The Cambio 75 Air-Ten upgrade also enables the debarker to run at higher feed speeds as it is fitted with 6 tools compared to the old style 5 tool rotor.

Combi-Cut Discs™

You can see that as a company we at SEL have invested a lot of time, money and effort in designing upgrades for our existing machinery and now this includes our chipper canter discs. Thus we now have the Combi-Cut™ discs available. These are a hybrid between spiral and long knife discs and eliminate the traditional problems that long knife discs have such as high power requirement and self-feeding issues. Combi-Cut™ discs use 30% less power than long knife discs - which is a huge saving on its own. But additionally they are also much easier to maintain and have very quick knife setting and the chip quality is second to none! In the UK we have 2 pairs in the James Jones's Lockerbie 3 mill, but James Jones have also now ordered another 2 pairs for the Lockerbie 1 sawmill. However we don't forget the Combi Spiral™ discs that we have been supplying for some years now. Taylormade, BSW and James Callander's have all taken deliveries of these recently, in fact Callanders are due there second set very soon!

Together with Milltech of Sweden we have installed new sawline control electronics at Drenagh Sawmills. The installation was done over a long weekend with full production achieved more or less immediately! The results have been and easier and more user friendly system for the customer to use and more importantly a much better controlled flow for the sawmill, taking a substantial amount of decision making away from the operator which will of course improve throughput. The Milltech system is also designed to be easily upgraded to "3D" when the customer has the desire to do so.

Bark Processing:

TMA Bark have taken delivery of 5 PST Spirals for their new bark processing plant at Western Longville in Norfolk. The main line is supplied by General Kinematics of Brierley Hill in the West Midlands. SEL originally supplied TMA with 3 Spirals and a Bruks screen for bark 3 years ago and they have been so happy with how the Spirals perform on such a high wearing aggressive material such as bark that the new bark plant was to have Spirals too. The new line will start up soon.

Highlights in 2010:

Up to the beginning of August SEL have now taken orders for "106 PST Spiral conveyors" in @3 years! Balcas have installed two for transporting hot wet ash from their boiler plant and the UEA, WPE, A & J Scott and Tarmac have purchased them for transporting wood chip. More Spirals have also been ordered by Indusvent, the industrial ventilation engineering specialists with whom SEL have formed a co-operation with in the UK to promote each others products.

It was sad to hear that unfortunately in June the new James Jones sawmill, Lockerbie 3, suffered from a fire in one of the bandsaw groups but gladly it was contained quickly. As soon as we heard about the fire we flew engineers over from Sweden to assess the damage. The machines are now back in Sweden and repairs etc are being carried out as quickly as possible.

To end this update on a brighter note SEL have also supplied many "upgrades" to existing customers this year such as new chipper canter discs, new chipper edger heads and an Air-Ten™ rotor for a Cambio 45 debarker. We are also extremely excited about SEL having a stand at the RWM exhibition in September at the NEC in Birmingham. This exhibition is aimed at the recycling and biomass industries, not sawmilling. Therefore we aim to have a fully working PST Spiral system on our stand as the Spirals are used to transport many other materials other than wood chip and sawdust such as plastic, food stuffs, compost, abattoir waste, fuel pellets, chemicals, sludge, RDF / SRF and aggregates to name but a few ! We look forward to meeting existing and new customers at the show.
